I thought being released from my two weeks notice was a nice way to have a couple extra days off before starting my new job. It seems from the conversations I had with one person at Much Too Large Corporation today that my best course of action would have been to wait until almost midnight of April 30 and THEN leave without notice. Since I didn't do that, since I didn't screw them blind, they might see fit to screw me blind. They might, but who is to be sure since no one official has actually talked to me about my final pay. Or my 56 hours of vacation pay that is owed to me. Or commission or bonus.
As a warning to all people who might be in my situation in the future: In sales, two weeks notice is for suckers.
Posted by kerewin at April 20, 2006 05:28 PMThat's pretty much true in any position, if your employer is prone to scurrilousness. When your exit from a job is immediate - no matter if that's due to layoff, firing, or to-the-CEO bird-flipping - federal law requires that your pay (salary, comissions, vacation, etc. all of it) is issued that very business day. Even tiny HR departments [should] have record keeping systems that allowi [and policies that require] them to issue a check on the spot.
The best thing to do in your situation (I learned this the hard way, [when leaving a role that included HR]) is to compile and make presentable your own records. Then, when you get your check 2 weeks from now, you can either cash that puppy or tell them you'll see them at the labor arbiter's office. If they're found to have stiffed you, they'll owe you an enormous interest-type-fee for each day that missing pay was denied.
Congrats on your new gig, btw!
Thanks! These past few days have been fun.
Part of the pay issue is that they have to wait until the end of the month to see what the final numbers are, and how well the route did in "brand goals" which accounts for about 1/3 of my pay. It still bites me that they haven't even called me to fill me in. I was a great employee who liked her job and gave full notice to be professional. This silence jsut leads my paranoia to believe that they think I was a bitter, resentful person who is looking to kick their ass, which I am not.
